ouch ..thats very sad story...
we hope many people learn from this tragedy...
I do not want to downplay the human tragedy that is someone ending their life without good cause, but if this page is remotely accurate, then is the number of suicides in the adult industry that big of a deal? There are 36 suicides reported here for time period 1970-2008; 38 years. That comes to a total of 0.94 suicides per year. I doubled that number and rounded up because this is surely an undercount, which resulted in 1.88 suicides per year and used 2 to be extra generous. Next up suicide rates for the general population. According to the gubment (source), there were 33,300 suicides from a population of 298,362,973, a rate of 0.0001 (1/10th of a percent). So if we have 2 suicides per year in the adult industry and a general population rate of suicides. To expect 2 suicides per year in the adult industry would require a population of 18,248 people working in the industry, if the rate of that industry matched the general population. I am ignorant of how many people are suspected of being involved in the adult industry in any given year, but I doubt it's 18,000 people. So depending on what the actual number of the the people that work in the adult industry, you may have a lower number of suicides per year in this industry than for the general population.
If that argument holds, then your implication that the adult industry drives it's participants to commit suicide at unacceptable rates is probably* unfounded.
Thoughts?
*probably because technically you'd want to find out what factors place someone at risk for suicide then control for those factors given the demographics of the adult film industry. But I am not that driven.
